Global epidermic, Coronavirus (CODVID 19) has led to the indefinite suspension of the 2020 Basketball Africa League (BAL) which was scheduled to start on March 13 in Dakar, Senegal.
President of BAL Amadou Gallo Fall announced the postponement of the competition, expressing regrets.
“I am disappointed we are not able to tip-off this historic league as scheduled but look forward to the highly-anticipated launch of the BAL at a later date,” Fall said in the statement.
According to organizers of the African basketball competition, the safety of fans, players, teams and employees is their priority, adding that the situation will be monitored ahead of revealing a new start date for the league.
As at March 5, 2020, Senegal which is to host the competition has recorded four cases of Coronavirus.
BAL president says, the rescheduling of the competition to a latter date comes “Following the recommendation of the Senegalese government regarding the escalating health concerns related to the coronavirus.”
BBC data on the epidemic shows that, Africa has recorded 27 cases of the virus. Meanwhile, a total of 3,311 deaths have been recorded from 96,979 cases of coronavirus.
The league is a joint effort between the National Basketball Association (NBA) and FIBA. Starting from this season, it is the highest tier continental league of Africa, replacing the FIBA AfroLeague.

Top flight league, Italian Serie A has postponed games, while Formula One has also moved the Chinese Grand Prix, with the rugby union’s Six Nations game between Ireland and Italy also had to be postponed.
