Borussia Dortmund stars Achraf Hakimi and Jadon Sancho called for justice for George Floyd after both players scored in Sunday’s Bundesliga game against Paderbon.
Sancho netted a sensational hat-trick, while Hakimi was also on the scoresheet as Dortmund romped to a 6-1 win over the league’s bottom side.
While the win was emphatic, it was the manner in which both players celebrated their goals that made the headlines.
After putting Dortmund 2-0 up in the 57th minute, Sancho took off his jersey, with the message “justice for George Floyd” displayed on his under shirt.
Although the England international was shown a yellow card for removing his shirt, it did not deter Hakimi from repeating the move.
The Moroccan full-back also paid tribute by displaying the “justice for George Floyd” message after scoring.
George Floyd died last Monday after a police officer handcuffed him to the ground and pressed his knee on his (Floyd’s) neck for almost eight minutes.
A video of the incident showed the victim telling the officer that he was struggling to breathe, but the policeman would have none of that.
The 46-year-old was left suffocated and passed out, before subsequently dying at a hospital in Minnesota.
Floyd’s murder sparked mass protests in various cities in the United States, with the protests turning violent on Thursday and throughout the weekend.
