Morecambe FC defender Christian Mbulu has died at the age of 23, the English club has announced.
In a statement on Twitter, the League Two side said everyone at the club is deeply saddened by the young player’s demise.
The club refused to shed light on what caused Mbulu’s deaths but described his passing as very sad.
"Everyone at Morecambe FC is deeply saddened to learn of Christian Mbulu's death and would like to extend our deepest sympathies to his family and friends at this very sad time," Morecambe tweeted on Tuesday.
Mbulu, who is of Congolese descent, lined up for a couple of lower league clubs, including Brentwood Town, Millwall and Crewe Alexandra.
The defender also had a notable stint with Scottish Premier League side Motherwell, where he played six times in the 2018/19 season.
After joining Morecambe in the winter, Mbulu made three appearances this season before the league was suspended due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
His death drew condolences messages from far and near, including some of his ex-teammates.
Motherwell chairman Jim McMahon described news of the player’s passing as shocking, saying: “He was such a friendly, pleasant and dedicated young man who we loved having around Fir Park.
"Our thoughts are with his family during this incredibly difficult time. We hope their privacy is respected by everyone as they try to come to terms with their loss,” McMahon added.
