English-Ghanaian midfielder Michael Adu-Poku struck in a thrilling 3-1 comeback as Newport County powered into the FA Cup second round.
English-Ghanaian midfielder Michael Adu-Poku put his name on the scoresheet as Newport County fought back from a goal down to beat Walsall 3-1 and book their place in the second round of the FA Cup.
Walsall came out sharp at Rodney Parade and grabbed the lead in the seventh minute. Aaron Pressley's header dropped into the path of Andrew Dallas, who finished from close range. The hosts did not stay rattled for long. In the 19th minute, Kion Etete drew Newport level, firing home after a pass from Ciaran Brennan.
Four minutes later, Adu-Poku turned the game on its head. His first effort was blocked by Lewis Simper, but the midfielder was first to react to the loose ball and found the net to put Newport in front. It was a classic poacher's instinct from a player who has become a key presence in the middle of the park.
Walsall pushed for an equaliser after the interval, but Newport stayed disciplined at the back. Adu-Poku was substituted in the 56th minute after helping his side take control of the contest, and Etete sealed the result four minutes later. His first attempt hit the post, but he reacted quickest to the rebound to make it 3-1.
The win sends Newport into the FA Cup second round for the second straight season, and Adu-Poku's strike will be one of the highlights of a strong day for the Welsh club.
