Africa CDC chief Jean Kaseya warns the unprecedented Ebola outbreak could spread worldwide like Covid unless funding surges now.
Africa's top public health body is raising the alarm. Dr Jean Kaseya, director general of the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC), says the continent's Ebola outbreak is spreading at an "unprecedented" pace and could reach countries far beyond Africa, including the UK.
The numbers are stark. The outbreak has now passed 10,000 cases, with almost 5,000 deaths. Kaseya compared the threat to Covid-19, which first took hold in China before spreading across the globe, claiming millions of lives and straining health systems and economies everywhere.
His message is that this is not only an African problem. Without a stronger response, he warns, Ebola could follow a similar path to Covid and become a threat to the whole world.
The fix, according to Kaseya, starts with money. He is calling for more funding to boost preparedness and to support possible treatments, so that countries can contain the virus before it travels further. The Africa CDC is pushing for faster, better-resourced action, and the pressure is now on global partners to match the urgency.
