Ghana sit bottom of Group C with no points, but George Afriyie insists the Black Stars can still book a ticket to AFCON 2027.
Ghana's Black Stars are in desperate need of redemption, and former GFA vice-president George Afriyie believes it starts with picking the strongest squad possible. The four-time African champions have stumbled out of the blocks in the 2027 AFCON qualifiers, but he insists the dream is far from dead.
The damage so far is painful. Ghana went down 2-0 to Ivory Coast in Bouaké, then threw away a two-goal lead at the Accra Sports Stadium to lose 4-2 to The Gambia. Two games, two defeats, zero points, and the Black Stars find themselves rooted to the bottom of Group C with four fixtures still to play.
Afriyie, however, is refusing to hit the panic button. Speaking on Sporty FM, he said Ghana's chances of reaching the tournament are not over and called on the technical team to assemble the best available players for the rest of the campaign. He pointed out that the group is played in a league format, meaning a run of victories could still turn the table around.
The next opportunity comes soon. Ghana will regroup next month for a double-header against Somalia, two matches that now look like must-win tests. With the pressure mounting on the coaching staff and the players alike, those games could define whether the Black Stars rebuild their campaign or watch AFCON 2027 slip away.
