Kimi Antonelli beat Max Verstappen to pole in Austin, setting up a Sunday shot at wrapping up his maiden F1 world championship.
Kimi Antonelli has put himself in position to crown his Formula 1 season. The Mercedes driver delivered a blistering lap at the Circuit of the Americas to take pole for the US Grand Prix, and he now has a real chance to clinch his first world title this weekend.
Max Verstappen pushed hard for Red Bull but had to settle for second, with Antonelli holding him off when it mattered. It was the kind of lap a championship leader needs: clean, fast and confident, with the pressure fully on.
The math is simple. Antonelli leads teammate George Russell by 102 points, and to seal the crown in Texas he must be 125 clear when the chequered flag falls on Sunday. That means stretching the gap by 23 points in a single race, and starting from the front gives him the best possible platform.
Behind the top two, Isack Hadjar impressed with third for Red Bull. Ferrari's Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton lined up fourth and fifth, while Russell, still the nearest title rival, could only manage sixth. That leaves him with work to do from the middle of the pack if he wants to keep the fight alive.
With pole secured and rivals scrambling, all eyes in Austin turn to Sunday. Antonelli controls his own destiny, and the lights go out with a title within reach.
