August 24 declared Kobe Bryant Day by Orange County officials

Share

August 24 has been declared Kobe Bryant Day following a unanimous vote by Orange County's Board of Supervisors.

The said date was chosen because the NBA legend wore the numbers 8 and 24 during his career.

Chairwoman of the Board of Supervisors, Michelle Steel said the date has been set aside to commemorate Bryant.

She described the Los Angeles Lakers legend as a person who was treasured in the Orange County community.

"A treasured member of our Orange County community, Kobe Bryant was the basketball legend that inspired so many young men and women to pursue their dreams and never give up," Steel stated.

"I'm proposing August 24 to be dedicated to the memory of Kobe Bryant, and all that he brought to Orange County community, which to (sic) strive to live by his words of encouraging those around us to never give up on their dreams.”

"The most important thing is to try and inspire people so that they can be great in whatever they want to do,” she added.

Bryant died alongside his daughter Gianna in January, following a helicopter crash which also claimed the lives of eight others.

He is rated as one of the greatest NBA players, having won five championships with Los Angeles Lakers and two Finals MVPs.

Meanwhile, sportswear giant Nike has is also set to honour the lateBryant with “Mamba Week”, which starts on August 24.

The Nike Foundation wants to raise $1 million for the Mamba and Mambacita Sports Foundation by releasing several Bryant signature products.
