Ghana's Olympic comeback bid hits a pivotal second-leg showdown with Libya in Accra, and CAF has named Gerson Angono to take the whistle.
Ghana's Black Meteors have their officiating crew for the next big step toward a long-awaited Olympic return. CAF has handed Equatorial Guinea's Gerson Adolfo Mico Esono Angono the whistle for the second leg of their U-23 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Libya.
The showdown is set for Tuesday, November 17, 2026, at the Accra Sports Stadium, with kick-off at 15:00 GMT. Esono Angono will get support from his compatriots Juan Ngua Nguema Eleng and Jose Antonio Eko, while Gilson Da Costa Lima Pereira of Sao Tome and Principe completes the assistant referee team. Liberia's Ivan Gartor Brown is Match Commissioner, and Senegal's Badara Diatta will serve as Referee Assessor.
Ghana skipped the opening round after receiving a bye, so this two-legged tie is their first real test of the campaign. Win on aggregate and the Black Meteors move into the final qualifying round, scheduled for March 22-30, 2027. There they would meet the winner of the Equatorial Guinea vs Niger tie.
The stakes go beyond a continental ticket. Ghana has been absent from the men's Olympic football tournament for 23 years, since the 2004 Athens Games. For a football nation with Ghana's pedigree, that drought has gone on long enough, and getting past Libya in front of the home crowd would be a big first move toward ending it.
