CAF to share $10.8m among member associations to alleviate COVID-19 impact

The Confederation of Africa Football Association (CAF) is set to cushion its member associations with a sum of $10.8 million.

The relief fund will be shared among all 54 member associations to help mitigate the economic impact of the Coronavirus pandemic.

This was agreed following a virtual meeting, via video conference, by members of CAF’s Emergency Committee on Thursday, May 29, 2020.

The COVID-19 pandemic has affected many countries on the continent, forcing a suspension of football activities.

Not only have league competitions been grounded, some players have also been forced to take pay cuts due to the economic impact on clubs.

The relief fund from CAF is, therefore, meant to aid the various associations in their management of football at the domestic levels.

In a statement, the Confederation said this is part of a relief plan to ease the financial burden on its member associations.

“The CAF emergency Committee has approved the immediate distribution of financial grants to member Federations to support the management of football at the domestic levels affected by the global pandemic,” said a statement from CAF.

“A total of USD 10.8 Million will be offered to the 54 Member associations on the continent as part of a relief plan to ease the financial burden on the African football community during these unprecedented times.”

This comes after the Confederation confirmed the distribution of $3.5 million to the participants of CAF Champions League and CAF Confederations Cup in the 2019/20 season.

Both inter club competitions were indefinitely suspended after the quarterfinals matches due to the Coronavirus pandemic.
