Chelsea goalkeeper Mendy injured on international duty; returns to club

Share

Chelsea goalkeeper Edouard Mendy has picked up a thigh injury on international duty with Senegal.

The 28-year-old completed a switch to Stamford Bridge from Rennes in September 2020 and claimed a clean sheet on his first Premier League start against Crystal Palace on October 3.

The new Chelsea goalkeeper has since returned to London and will be assessed by the club.

Chelsea said Mendy "had a medical examination in a hospital in Rabat, where Senegal are due to play Morocco".

The club added: "Mendy has since returned to Chelsea where he will undergo further examinations."

Meanwhile, the player's agent, Djily Dieng, told the BBC the injury is "not that bad" and his recovery should take about 10 days.

Earlier this week, Kepa Arrizabalaga, who cost the Blues £72million when he joined from Athletic Bilbao in 2018, expressed his confidence that he could win back the number one spot in West London.

The Spaniard kept a clean sheet against Portugal on Wednesday.

Chelsea return to action in the Premier League with a home game against Southampton on Saturday, 17 October 2020.
