Jayden Daniels held the ball with 12 seconds left in overtime, the clock ran out, and Washington had to settle for a stunning tie with the Giants.
Jayden Daniels will be replaying this one for a long time. With the Washington Commanders in field-goal range in overtime on Sunday, the quarterback scrambled and went down for no gain with 12 seconds left. With no timeouts remaining, the clock ran out before Washington could get a kick off, and the game ended 27-27 against the New York Giants.
It was a bizarre finish to an extra period full of mistakes from both sides. With two minutes left in overtime, Daron Payne stripped the ball from Cam Skattebo just as the Giants were closing in on a game-winning field goal. Daniels then marched the Commanders to the Giants' 24-yard line, setting up what looked like a simple kick to win it.
Instead, Washington lined up to spike the ball, but the seconds bled away. Head coach Dan Quinn tore off his headset in frustration as the clock hit zero. The tie leaves the Commanders at 1-3-1.
The Giants will take the point after a wild afternoon. They had to rally from 14 points down just to reach overtime, and they were nearly undone by their own late turnover.
Elsewhere around the league, Drake Maye threw four touchdown passes as the New England Patriots routed the Las Vegas Raiders 45-17. In London, the Jacksonville Jaguars stunned the Philadelphia Eagles with a score on the final second.
