Alexander Ababio calls Petros Koukouras' cassava-farm comparison reckless after Debibi United's 1-0 win over Bibiani GoldStars.
The Ghana Premier League has a fresh war of words on its hands. Debibi United CEO Alexander Ababio has hit back at Bibiani GoldStars coach Petros Koukouras, branding his criticism of the Debibi Presby Park pitch reckless and unreasonable.
The row started after GoldStars lost 1-0 to the Premier League newcomers on Matchday 7 of the 2026/27 season. The Greek tactician was unhappy with the surface and suggested it was better suited to growing cassava than playing football.
Ababio did not let it slide. Speaking on local radio, he turned the joke back on the coach, wondering aloud how people are fed in Greece if that is how cassava is grown there. He told Koukouras to focus on his own job and stop talking nonsense.
The spat has reopened a familiar debate about pitch quality in Ghana's top flight. Koukouras is one of several foreign coaches who have raised concerns about playing surfaces this season.
For Debibi, the priority is staying up. Ababio says the club remains focused on securing top-flight status after a tough start to their first Premier League campaign, with seven points from eight matches so far.
