Defoe Eyes History as Woking Boss, Champions Black Manager Breakthrough

Share

Former England striker Jermain Defoe wants to blaze a trail for Black coaches while chasing promotion in his first managerial role.

Jermain Defoe is determined to make his mark both on the pitch and in the boardroom as he embarks on his managerial journey with National League outfit Woking. The former England international, who scored 162 Premier League goals across a glittering career, sees his new role as more than just chasing promotion – he wants to open doors for the next generation of Black coaches.

The 42-year-old striker-turned-gaffer joins a growing movement of former players breaking barriers in management. Defoe's appointment comes at a crucial time when English football continues to grapple with underrepresentation of Black managers at all levels, despite the abundance of talent from African and Caribbean communities that have shaped the modern game.

Defoe's coaching philosophy will be tested immediately as Woking battles for promotion from the National League. The Surrey-based club represents the perfect launching pad for a manager eager to prove his tactical acumen matches his goal-scoring instincts. Having played under tactical masterminds like Harry Redknapp and Mauricio Pochettino during spells at Tottenham, Defoe brings invaluable experience to his new challenge.

With African-born players and coaches increasingly making waves across European leagues, Defoe's journey could inspire a new wave of diversity in English football management. His success at Woking would send a powerful message that talent and determination, rather than outdated networks, should determine who gets opportunities to lead from the touchline.
