Ghana's Douglas Owusu adds Israel's Toto Cup to his collection as Hapoel Tel Aviv edge city rivals Maccabi 3-2 in a thriller.
Ghanaian forward Douglas Owusu is collecting silverware at a remarkable pace. The attacker has now won three trophies in just five months after Hapoel Tel Aviv beat city rivals Maccabi Tel Aviv 3-2 on Thursday to lift the Israeli League Cup, better known as the Toto Cup.
Owusu played 80 minutes of a fiercely contested derby final before Amit Lemkin replaced him. Hapoel then held firm to protect their advantage and see out a nervy finish against their neighbours, sealing a prestigious domestic prize.
The medal follows a successful spell at Serbian giants Red Star Belgrade, where Owusu helped the club win both the Serbian Super Liga title and the Serbian Cup. With the Toto Cup now in the cabinet, he has won silverware in two different European leagues, a rare feat for a player still early in his career on the continent.
For Ghanaian football fans, it is another sign that Owusu's move to Europe is paying off. Trophy-winning habits tend to get noticed, and the forward is building a résumé that will keep his name in conversation back home and across Africa's growing list of European success stories.
