Ex-Uganda Defender Sekagya Promoted as New York Red Bulls Assistant Coach

Former Uganda centre-back Ibrahim Sekagya has been promoted to full-time assistant coach of Major League Soccer (MLS) outfit New York Red Bulls after serving as head coach of the reserve team (New York Red Bulls II).

The 44-year-old has been in charge of the Red Bulls’ reserve team since February 2023 and led them to the MLS NEXT Pro Eastern Conference semifinals in his first full season.

NYRB II are currently experiencing their best form in franchise history as they sit atop the Eastern Conference standings with eight wins and two draws from 12 games, scoring 27 goals, the most of any side in the conference.

Sekagya, who was NYRB II assistant coach from their inaugural season in 2015 until 2022, will lead the team one last time on Saturday against Chattanooga FC at MSU Soccer Park.

“We are pleased to add Ibra [Sekagya] to our first team coaching staff on a full-time basis,” Head of Sport Jochen Schneider said on the club website.

“He has led the development of many great players at NYRB II and have led the team to a great start to the 2025 MLS NEXT Pro season. He has earned this opportunity, and we are grateful to have him as a part of this organisation.”

Sekagya ended his playing career by playing for two seasons with the Red Bulls from 2013 to 2014, making 41 competitive appearances and helping them win the 2013 Supporters’ Shield.

The biggest stint of his career was at Red Bull Salzburg, where he played 225 times between 2007 and 2013, winning three Austrian Bundesliga titles and the Austrian Cup.

His career started in his home country with Kampala Capital City Authority FC in 1997 before going to Argentina to play for Atletico de Rafaela, Ferro Carril Oeste, AND Arsenal de Sarandi between 2001 and 2007.

He also played for the Uganda national team 35 times between 1999 and 2011, scoring three goals.
