Ghana's FA says Kim Lars Bjorkegren's national team record earned him the interim Black Stars job, but questions linger over tactical direction.
Ghana's Black Stars are heading into their next AFCON qualifiers with a fresh face in the dugout, and the GFA is standing firmly behind its choice. Kim Lars Bjorkegren, the Swedish coach currently in charge of the Black Queens, will lead the senior men's team against Somalia as interim boss following Carlos Queiroz's exit.
A five-member committee recommended Bjorkegren for the temporary role, and GFA Communications Director Henry Asante Twum explained the thinking. The panel looked inside the national team structure and concluded Bjorkegren is the best-performing coach among those currently working with Ghana's national sides. Asante Twum said he does not expect the step up to be a problem for him.
The coach will not be going it alone. Godwin Attram, who worked under Queiroz, joins the setup to provide continuity with the previous regime. Ibrahim Tanko, who has enjoyed success in the domestic game, completes the interim staff. The GFA says the mix of experience with the outgoing coach and local league knowledge was deliberate.
Still, the move raises real questions about tactical leadership at a sensitive time. Moving a coach from the women's program to the men's senior team on short notice is a big ask, and the Black Stars cannot afford any slip in qualifying. Against Somalia, Ghana will be expected to win, and fans will be watching closely to see what identity Bjorkegren brings to the team.
