Ghana's second tier gets a financial lift as the GFA releases the first tranche of its GH¢120,000 annual support to all 48 UMB Division One clubs.
Ghana's football pyramid just got a serious boost from the base. The Ghana Football Association has released the first tranche of its annual GH¢120,000 support package to all 48 clubs in the Universal Merchant Bank (UMB) Division One League, putting real money behind the country's second tier.
The payout comes through the GFA's sponsorship partnership with Universal Merchant Bank and is aimed at easing the heavy costs of competing in Ghana's second division. Every club is entitled to the full GH¢120,000 over the course of the season, with the funds earmarked for essential expenses, stronger administration and a more sustainable footing.
The GFA says the intervention should take some pressure off clubs juggling routine operations, player welfare, logistics and administrative demands. Life in Division One means major commitments away from the pitch, and this support is designed to help teams meet those obligations while they chase results on it.
The cash is not the only help on offer. The GFA has confirmed it will keep covering a number of key match-day costs for Division One fixtures, including fees for referees, Match Commissioners and venue media officers. For clubs on tight budgets, that kind of backing can make a real difference.
For a league that serves as the proving ground for Ghana's next wave of clubs, players and coaches, investment at this level is a statement: a strong national game starts with healthy foundations.
