English-Ghanaian teenager Ryan McAidoo came off the bench and set up Phil Foden's hat-trick goal in Manchester City's 5-1 Champions League rout of AEK Athens.
English-Ghanaian winger Ryan McAidoo announced himself on the Champions League stage on Tuesday night, coming off the bench to set up Phil Foden's hat-trick goal in Manchester City's 5-1 demolition of AEK Athens at the Etihad.
The teenager replaced Floyd Samba in the 62nd minute and needed little time to settle. In the 76th minute he timed a run down the right flank perfectly and whipped in a precise cross, and Foden finished from close range to seal the emphatic win.
City had been in control from the start. Elliot Anderson opened the scoring in the 12th minute and Foden doubled the lead in the 34th. AEK threatened a fightback when Stavros Pilios pulled one back early in the second half, but Rayan Cherki restored the two-goal cushion in the 57th minute.
Foden then added his second in the 65th minute, before McAidoo's delivery gave him his third. For a young winger of Ghanaian heritage handed a taste of European football with City, an assist on this stage is a statement, and one the diaspora will be watching closely.
