Jamie Leweling's stunning strike put Stuttgart ahead, but Atletico hit back and a red card still couldn't produce a winner in a 1-1 UCL draw.
Germany-born forward Jamie Leweling, who is of Ghanaian descent, put his name in the Champions League spotlight on Tuesday night, scoring for VfB Stuttgart in a 1-1 draw with Atletico Madrid at the MHPArena. It was the third league-phase game of the campaign for both sides.
Leweling broke the deadlock in the 36th minute. He picked up the ball on the edge of the box and curled a superb effort into the left side of the goal, sending the home crowd into raptures and putting Stuttgart in front.
Atletico needed little time to answer after the interval. In the 47th minute, Ademola Lookman threaded a pass into the area for Julian Alvarez, who finished smartly into the top-right corner to make it 1-1 and turn the game into a tense battle.
The contest swung again in the 64th minute when Atletico midfielder Morten Hjulmand was shown a straight red card, leaving the visitors a man down. Stuttgart pushed for a winner against ten men but couldn't find a breakthrough, and the sides shared the points.
