Bibiani GoldStars boss Petros Koukouras led a wave of compassion for Elmina Sharks' William John Donkoh after his leg was amputated following a crash.
The Ghana Premier League is standing together in support of Elmina Sharks goalkeeper William John Donkoh, who had his left leg amputated after a motor accident in Cape Coast. The shot-stopper was badly hurt in the crash on Tuesday, October 20, 2026, and underwent surgery on Wednesday night.
Elmina Sharks confirmed the news in a statement dated October 22. The club said its board, management, players and supporters were deeply saddened, and promised to stand with Donkoh and his family through his recovery and beyond.
Bibiani GoldStars coach Petros Koukouras was among the first from the wider football community to speak out. After his side's win over Heart of Lions, he put the result aside and sent his best wishes to the keeper. "There are definitely more important things in life than football," he said.
Koukouras added that tragedies like this hit hard, especially when young people and footballers are involved. "It really affects everyone," he said, calling the news very bad and wishing Donkoh a very fast recovery.
For now, the focus in Ghanaian football is on the young goalkeeper and the long road ahead of him. The messages of solidarity from rival benches show how a sport built on competition can still come together when one of its own needs support.
