Ghana’s Abedi Pele Ranked 4th Greatest African Footballer Of All Time

Share

The France Football magazine has ranked the greatest African footballers of all time, with Abedi Ayew “Pele” coming in fourth place.

The former Ghana international is regarded as one of the best players ever to emerge from Africa, having left an indelible mark on the game.

However, the magazine’s ranking of the greatest talents from the continent saw him placed below three other extraordinary players.

Liberia icon George Oppong Weah came in first place, with Cameroonian duo Samuel Eto’o and Roger Milla coming in second and third, respectively.

Cote d’Ivoire legend Didier Drogba, however, was ranked sixth, while Rabah Madjer, Jay Jay Okocha, Mustapha Dahleb, Salif Keita, and Laurent Pokou rounded up the top 10 in that order.

Abedi Pele was a key member of the Olympique Marseille side that won the UEFA Champions League in the 1992/93 season.

At the international level, he captained Ghana to the final of the Africa Cup of Nations in 1992, having won the tournament a decade earlier.

That same year, he was ranked ninth in the race for the FIFA World Player of the Year, while he also won the African Footballer of the Year award three times.
