Jarell Quansah is happy to be tested at right-back, calling the switch a chance to grow into a more complete defender.
Another English-Ghanaian talent is rewriting his own story on the world stage. Jarell Quansah, the 23-year-old defender of Ghanaian heritage, says he has no problem being moved from centre-back to right-back, and he sees the change as a chance to grow.
The move came out of necessity. Injuries in the England squad forced Quansah wide at the 2026 World Cup in North America, and he has kept playing there for both his country and Bayer Leverkusen. He has not looked back.
"Of course, it's a good option for me. I'm joking about it a bit," Quansah said. He explained that in recent years he has discovered more of what he can do, especially in how he influences the team going forward and contributes in attacking phases. "I'm still learning the position and how I can improve. This will only make me a better footballer," he added.
The versatility is raising his stock. Real Madrid and Arsenal are among the clubs reported to be watching him since he left Liverpool for Leverkusen in the summer of 2025. Liverpool are also understood to have kept a buy-back option reportedly worth €70 million, so his next move could be a big one.
For the diaspora, Quansah is another example of Ghanaian roots shaping the elite game in Europe. He is now showing that he can defend and attack from more than one position.
