Ghanaian Tyrone Owusu Makes Telstar History as Eredivisie Player of the Month

Dutch-born Ghanaian Tyrone Owusu fired Telstar into the record books, becoming the club's first Eredivisie Player of the Month winner.

Ghanaian talent is lighting up the Netherlands. Dutch-born Tyrone Owusu has been named Eredivisie Player of the Month for October, and he is the first player in Telstar's history to win the award.

The 27-year-old midfielder earned it with a blistering run of form, scoring five goals over the month, four of them in four consecutive league games. He struck twice in a 2-2 draw with ADO Den Haag, the club that developed him, then added goals against heavyweights Feyenoord, plus Go Ahead Eagles and FC Utrecht.

That streak also put Owusu in rare company. He is only the second Telstar player to score in four straight league matches, after Co Stout, the former Holland international who did it back in 1977, almost half a century ago.

His influence went well beyond the goals. The former Quick Boys man created twelve chances from open play, more than any teammate, and added an assist. He also completed 102 passes in the final third, again the best in the squad, and had thirteen touches in the opposition box, which made him one of Telstar's most constant threats near goal.

For a player of Ghanaian heritage who has worked his way up through the Dutch game, this is a landmark moment, and the pressure is now on Eredivisie defences to find a way to stop him.
