Oliver Glasner says Nottingham Forest need a blend of trust and discipline, a balance between Woodstock and the military, to stay competitive.
Oliver Glasner has set out his blueprint for Nottingham Forest, and it is not a hippie commune. The Austrian coach says a squad cannot get through the grind of the Premier League on "flower power" alone.
Glasner's message is about balance. At one extreme is a Woodstock-style dressing room built on freedom, good vibes and trust. At the other is a military regime built on rules, hierarchy and respect for authority. He argues Forest need elements of both, with neither side taking over.
The idea is simple. Players who feel trusted tend to play with confidence and take responsibility. Without clear standards and accountability, though, that freedom can turn into drift, and the Premier League punishes drift quickly. Glasner wants a group that enjoys its football but also knows exactly where the lines are.
How well he gets that mix right will shape Forest's season. The league leaves little room for a team that is too relaxed or too rigid, and the approach will be judged on the pitch, in the intensity, organisation and resilience Forest show when the pressure rises.
