German football club Hamburger SV has officially announced the loan signing of Adedire Emmanuel Awokoya-Mebude from Belgian Pro League team KVC Westerlo.

The 20-year-old Nigerian-born winger, known for his versatility across the forward line, joins the 2. Bundesliga side for the rest of the 2024/25 season. His arrival fills the gap left by Bakery Jatta, who is recovering from an ankle ligament injury.

Hamburger SV’s sports board member, Stefan Kuntz, expressed the club’s confidence in Mebude’s potential.

He stated, “Bringing in Adedire Mebude on loan gives us the core skills needed for that position, and we believe he has great potential.”

Claus Costa, the club’s sporting director, highlighted Mebude’s qualities, including his explosive pace and ability to make runs behind the defense.

He added that Mebude’s attributes would be an ideal addition to the team’s attacking options on the wing.

Mebude, excited by the move, shared his enthusiasm about joining Hamburger SV.

He stated, “I’m absolutely delighted to be part of HSV and to call this stadium home. When HSV come asking, you don’t say no.”

Looking ahead to his debut against Hannover 96, Mebude expressed his eagerness to contribute to the team’s success: “I want to get my teammates into the game and give the fans something to cheer. I’ll do my absolute best and help HSV achieve their number one goal.”

Born in London to Nigerian parents, Mebude grew up in Scotland and has represented Scotland’s U21 team 13 times.

Although he has earned caps for Scotland at the youth level, he remains eligible to play for Nigeria’s national team.

Mebude’s football journey began at Rangers before he joined Manchester City’s youth setup in 2020. His impressive youth performances, including 30 goals and 34 assists in 71 appearances, earned him the Academy Player of the Year award in the 2021/22 season. After a £1.65 million move to Westerlo in 2023, Mebude now looks forward to making an impact at Hamburger SV in the 2. Bundesliga.
