Idrissa Gueye, Victor Osimhen lead Ligue 1's top African award shortlist

Paris Saint-Germain and Senegal midfielder Idrissa Gueye and Lille's Nigeria striker Victor Osimhen are among 11 footballers in the run for 2019/20 Ligue 1's top African footballer award.

The annual award - known as Marc-Vivien Foe award - rewards the best African footballer in Ligue 1 over a 12-month period.

The winner will succeed Arsenal and Ivory Coast winger Nicolas Pepe who won the award last season in France after his fine contributions for Lille.

The award is dedicated to late Cameroon international Marc Vivien Foe who died in a Confederations Cup game against France in 2003.

The other nominees include Rennes trio Mbaye Niang, Hamari Traore and goalkeeper Edouard Mendy, Monaco striker Islam Slimani, Reims centre-back Yunis Abdelhamid, Montpellier forward Andy Delort, Saint-Etienne forward Denis Bouanga and Metz star Habib Diallo.

The shortlist is dominated by four Senegalese, with two Algerians, two Nigerians, one Gabonese, one Moroccan and also included one Malian.

Rennes have three players represented in this year’s set of nominations, more than any other club.
