Joel Matip ruled out for the rest of the season due to injury

Liverpool defender Joel Matip is expected to miss the remaining of the campaign for the English Premier League because of injury.

Matip was forced off during the second half of the goalless draw in the Merseyside derby back on June 21 after hurting his foot.

But the center-back is not likely to recover in time to play in a part in any of the club's final seven games of a season that has already seen them become Premier League champions.

According to the Reds defender, this season is over for him and he is looking forward to coming back strong when the next season starts.

"This season I will be not back on the pitch but for next season, I hope I'm going to be quite early a direct help for the team," Matip told the club's official website.

The 28-year-old former Schalke 04 defender joined Liverpool in 2016 on a free transfer, following the expiration of his contract with Schalke.

His pair with Van Dijk helped the reds to win the Champions League last season and also contribute to the wining of the league for the first time in 20-years.

Liverpool coach Jurgen Klopp will now rely on just three of his senior center-back for the remaining of the season.

Born and raised in Germany, he represented his father's country, Cameroon at the international level and played for them at the 2010 Africa Cup of Nations and the FIFA World Cups of 2010 and 2014.

Matip resigns from Cameroon national team after cited his reason for his resignation was his unhappiness with the national team set up and his bad experience with the coaching staff.
