Two defeats, zero points and a coach gone: ex-Black Star Laryea Kingston says Ghana's AFCON 2027 dream now hangs on a miracle.
Ghana's road to AFCON 2027 has turned into a crisis. Former Black Stars midfielder Laryea Kingston says only a miracle can now carry the four-time continental champions to the finals in Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda.
The Black Stars sit bottom of Group C with no points after two games. They opened with a 2-0 loss to Ivory Coast in Bouake, then suffered a painful 4-2 home defeat to The Gambia at the Accra Sports Stadium. Ghana led that second game 2-0 and still let it slip, which made the damage even worse.
The fallout has been swift. Head coach Carlos Queiroz has left his post, and an interim technical team will take charge for the next two qualifiers against Somalia in November. Those matches now look like must-win games for a side that can't afford more slip-ups.
Kingston now coaches Uganda's junior national teams, so he knows the East African terrain that will host the tournament. He admits the picture looks bleak, calling qualification a miracle given the early setbacks. With rivals already collecting points, he says the gap Ghana must close is getting harder to bridge.
Ghana's pedigree is not in question, but the margin for error is gone. The Black Stars need a reset and a win in November to keep their AFCON 2027 hopes alive.
