Ghana's most decorated club is reportedly talking to Serbian tactician Costa Papic as it looks to replace Eric Tinkler on the touchline.
Ghana's biggest club is shopping for a new boss. Asante Kotoko have reportedly opened talks with representatives of Costa Papic, the Serbian coach who is well known in Ghanaian football from his time at Hearts of Oak, as they try to fill the vacancy left by Eric Tinkler.
The South African tactician left the Porcupine Warriors just a few games into the season to take the Durban City job, leaving the record Ghana Premier League champions without a permanent coach. Kotoko are said to be weighing several candidates, and Papic is one of the names on the list. No agreement has been reached with anyone yet.
At 66, Papic knows the Ghanaian game well. He coached Hearts of Oak, Kotoko's great rivals, from 2007 to 2009 and returned for a second spell in the 2020/21 season. That experience of the league and its pressures could count in his favour at a club where expectations never drop.
Whoever takes over inherits a side that has struggled for consistency. Kotoko have won three, drawn two and lost two of their first seven league games. Their 11 points leave them eighth in the table, well short of what their fans demand. The next appointment will need to settle the team quickly and get the season back on track.
