David Kwarteng's seventh-minute strike etched his name into tournament history and sent Ghana top of Group A in Ouagadougou.
Ghana's Black Starlets have their hero and their historic moment. David Kwarteng became the first player to score at the 2026 WAFU Zone B U-17 Championship, netting in the seventh minute to hand Ghana a 1-0 win over Togo at the August 4 Sports Stadium in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso.
The breakthrough came from a well-worked set-piece on Saturday, October 10. Abdul Latif Wunzalgu got the move going, and Togo managed to block the initial free-kick. Captain Abdul Rafiu Issah had a second go, but it was Kwarteng who reacted fastest to pounce and finish.
From there, the Black Starlets locked in. They protected that slender advantage and saw out the contest to collect all three points from their opening fixture.
The result put Ghana at the summit of Group A. The other match in the group finished goalless, with hosts Burkina Faso and Benin sharing the spoils.
The stakes are high for this young Ghana side, who are chasing a place at the 2027 U-17 Africa Cup of Nations through this regional tournament. Next up is Benin on Tuesday, October 13, where Kwarteng and his team-mates will aim to build on a perfect start.
