Ghana legend Nii Odartey Lamptey says the interim technical team is the smart play as the Black Stars chase a 2027 AFCON qualifying revival.
Ghana great Nii Odartey Lamptey has thrown his weight behind the decision to hand the Black Stars to an interim technical team for their upcoming 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Somalia, calling it a wise and sensible move at a turbulent moment for the four-time continental champions.
The pressure is real. Ghana missed the 2025 AFCON in Morocco and are desperate to get back on the continental stage, yet their 2027 qualifying campaign has stumbled out of the blocks. A 2-0 loss to Ivory Coast in Bouake was followed by a painful 4-2 home defeat to The Gambia at the Accra Sports Stadium. Those results were swiftly followed by the exit of head coach Carlos Queiroz.
In response, the Ghana Football Association and the Ministry of Sports and Recreation formed a five-member committee to lead the hunt for a permanent successor. In the meantime, they have settled on a stopgap solution for the Matchday Three and Four fixtures against Somalia in November. Black Queens boss Kim Lars Björkegren will take charge, supported by assistants Ibrahim Tanko and Godwin Attram, while former Ghana goalkeeper Fatawu Dauda comes in as goalkeeper trainer.
Lamptey believes the arrangement buys the authorities precious breathing room. Rather than rushing into a hasty appointment, the committee can take its time to find the right man for the long-term job while the interim staff steadies the ship. For a Ghana side with their AFCON dreams under strain, back-to-back results against Somalia could be the first step toward redemption.
