Ghana legend Nii Odartey Lamptey wants the interim Black Stars staff to hand Premier League players a shot in the AFCON 2027 qualifiers.
A Ghana great is calling on the Black Stars to look homeward. Former international Nii Odartey Lamptey has urged the interim technical team to be fearless and bring Ghana Premier League players into the squad for the AFCON 2027 qualifiers against Somalia.
The two sides meet in a double-header this month, with the first leg on November 12 and the return four days later. Both games are expected to be staged in Ghana, so the home crowd will be watching closely. The interim bench, led by Kim Lars Björkegren with Ibrahim Tanko and Godwin Attram assisting, is due to name its squad this week.
Speaking on Asempa FM's Ultimate Sports Show, Lamptey argued that the staff's own track record should give them the confidence to make bold calls. He pointed out that Attram has been part of the setup, that Björkegren has worked with the team before, and that Tanko's experience is not something to overlook. If they believe local players can contribute, he said, they should go for it.
Lamptey also drew on his own playing days with the national team, recalling a period when home-based players were a bigger part of the group. For him, the qualifiers against Somalia are the ideal moment to hand the domestic league a platform and show that Ghana's own talent can deliver on the continental stage.
All eyes now turn to the squad announcement. Will the interim staff take Lamptey's advice and open the door to the local league?
