Lyon beats Wolfsburg to win 5th successive Women’s Champions League

Share

Lyon have won their fifth consecutive Women’s Champions League title after defeating Wolfsburg on Sunday.

The French side have dominated the competition for years, having won the trophy a record seven times.

Lyon made light work of their German opponents by coasting to a 2-0 lead inside the first 45 minutes of the game.

France's Eugenie le Sommer put them ahead with a deft finish, before Japan's Saki Kumagai doubled the lead before half time.

Alexandra Popp gave Wolfsburg a bit of hope after the break with a goal to make it 2-1, but Sara Bjork Gunnarsdottir's late third sealed the win.

Lyon have appeared nine times in the final of the Women’s Champions League since 2010, winning it seven times.

Sunday’s final was played at the home ground of Spanish men's side Real Sociedad, with no fans in attendance due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The game finally brought the extended 2019-20 European season to an end for both men's and women's football.

Last week, Bayern Munich defeated PSG 1-0 to win the men’s Champions League.
