Marvin Senaya ruled out for eight weeks after hamstring surgery

Black Stars defender Marvin Senaya has been ruled out for at least eight weeks after undergoing successful surgery on a hamstring injury sustained during Ghana’s 2026 FIFA World Cup Round-of-32 defeat to Colombia.

The Ghana Football Association (GFA) confirmed the diagnosis in a statement released on Wednesday.

The 23-year-old Auxerre right-back went down inside the opening 10 minutes of Ghana’s 1-0 loss to Colombia at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City on Friday, July 3rd.

According to the GFA, an MRI scan carried out on the France-based defender in Kansas City in the immediate aftermath of the game revealed a significant hamstring injury, prompting the Black Stars medical team to begin initial management of the acute injury.

Senaya subsequently travelled to Paris, where he underwent successful surgery, before returning to his club Auxerre to continue his rehabilitation.

"There is active collaboration between the Ghana Football Association and AJ Auxerre to ensure a smooth rehabilitation journey for the defender," the GFA said.

"Marvin is expected to be out for at least eight weeks."

The association added that the leadership of the GFA, the Management Committee of the Black Stars, the technical team and the playing body had sent their best wishes to the player and were praying for a speedy recovery.

Senaya featured in all four of Ghana’s matches at the World Cup before his tournament, and the Black Stars’ tournament, ended together in Kansas City.

An eight-week absence would place Senaya’s expected return in early September, and would put both his club matches with Auxerre and Ghana’s opening 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Ivory Coast that month in doubt.
