Christian Agyenim's injury-time winner ends Medeama's unbeaten start as Kotoko and Aduana bounce back on a dramatic Ghana Premier League Matchday 7.
Ghana's Premier League has its first big shock of the season. Defending champions Medeama SC finally tasted defeat on Matchday 7, beaten 2-1 by FC Samartex 1996 at the Nsenkyire Arena. Christian Agyenim struck three minutes into stoppage time to snatch all three points.
Samartex had led through Joshuah Fuseini in the 54th minute. Dominic Amponsah levelled for Medeama in the 79th, and a draw looked likely until Agyenim's late finish. Medeama stay top on 14 points, but they are now level with Hearts of Oak and Samartex, so the title race is wide open.
There was relief in Kumasi, where Asante Kotoko responded to their recent setback by beating Young Apostles 2-1 at the Baba Yara Stadium. Hubert Gyau broke the deadlock in the 70th minute and Solomon Nsor Asaah doubled the lead 12 minutes later. Huziaf Iddrisu pulled one back for Young Apostles with a late direct free-kick, but Kotoko held firm and climbed to sixth. Young Apostles remain in the relegation zone.
Aduana FC also bounced back from their last defeat, taking a 1-0 home win over FC AshantiGold 04. With the leaders dropping points and the chasing pack closing in, the table is tightening early in the season.
