The Hall of Fame tight end and Super Bowl XX-winning coach who defined Chicago football toughness has passed away at 86, his family announced.
Mike Ditka, the gruff, fiery soul of Chicago Bears football, has died at the age of 86. His family confirmed the news, calling him a beloved husband, father, grandfather and friend, and the heart of their family.
Ditka's football life was a rare double act. As a ferocious tight end, he helped change the way the position was played, bulldozing defenders and earning his place in the Pro Football Hall of Fame. He won an NFL championship with the Bears in 1963 and later added a Super Bowl ring as a player with the Dallas Cowboys.
Then came the chapter that made him a legend. Back in Chicago as head coach, Ditka built a swaggering, bruising team around a punishing defense and a never-back-down attitude. The 1985 Bears rolled to the Super Bowl XX title, a dominant run that still ranks among the most iconic seasons in NFL history. Their cultural footprint went far beyond the field, with the Super Bowl Shuffle and a coach who was as recognizable for his scowl and mustache as for his playbook.
In Ditka's family's words, the world knew him as a Hall of Fame player, a legendary coach and the leader of Chicago's Super Bowl XX champions. For generations of Bears fans, he was something simpler: the toughest guy in the building, and the one who made Chicago believe. His legacy will be remembered forever.
