Montpellier Appoint Zoumana Camara as New Head Coach Following Gasset’s Dismissal

Share

Montpellier have appointed Zoumana Camara as their new manager less than 24 hours after the dismissal of Jean-Louis Gasset.

La Paillade dismissed Gasset having failed to lift them from the bottom of the log after 28 games.

The appointment of Zoumana Camara will be his first senior managerial role, having spent over five years as assistant coach at Paris Saint-Germain under Laurent Blanc, Unai Emery and Thomas Tuchel

The former French centre-back of Senegalese heritage left his role as PSG assistant after the arrival of Mauricio Pochettino in 2021, and spent three seasons coaching the Under-19 team.

Montpellier have garnered just 15 points from 28 games, and 12 points shy of safety with six games left to end the season.

The first game of Zoumana Camara will be away at Angers on Sunday.

The 46-year-old was a former player, spending the final eight years of his career with PSG.

His career began at Saint-Etienne and went on to Inter Milan in between loan spells at Empoli and Bastia before moving to Olympique Marseille and RC Lens with a loan spell at Lee’s United in England.

Camara earned only one cap for the France national team against Australia at the 2001 FIFA Confederation Cup.
