Funding worries and slow venue progress have put North Africa's heavyweights in the frame to step in if Ghana can't deliver the 2027 U-20 AFCON.
Morocco and Egypt are lining up as possible rescue hosts for the 2027 TotalEnergies CAF U-20 Africa Cup of Nations, should Ghana fail to meet the standards required to stage it. The two North African powerhouses are seen as ready-made alternatives if CAF decides a switch is needed.
Ghana was handed the hosting rights in April 2026, with the tournament pencilled in for March 2027 as part of the country's 70th Independence anniversary celebrations. It was meant to be a proud showpiece. But with less than five months to go, concerns over funding and a lack of visible infrastructure upgrades at the proposed venues have raised doubts about the Black Stars' readiness to welcome the continent's best young talent.
Baba Yara Stadium in Kumasi, Cape Coast Stadium and the University of Ghana Stadium have all been earmarked for the competition, with the Accra Sports Stadium also under consideration. The question is whether the work needed to bring them up to tournament standard is actually happening in time.
Morocco and Egypt both bring deep experience of staging major CAF competitions, which is what makes them such natural fallback options. There is also recent precedent. Egypt took over the 2025 U-20 AFCON after Côte d'Ivoire withdrew less than a month before kick-off. Côte d'Ivoire missed the finals, while Egypt had already qualified on sporting merit. It showed CAF will move quickly to appoint a new host when the original one cannot proceed.
Any similar change involving Ghana would ultimately be CAF's call. For now, the clock is ticking, and all eyes are on Accra to show the progress that keeps this tournament at home.
