Morocco Races to Complete 120 Projects Across Six Cities Ahead of AFCON 2025

Share

A high-level strategic meeting held Thursday at Morocco’s Ministry of Interior has confirmed that preparations for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) are progressing according to schedule, with more than 120 construction and renovation projects currently underway across six host cities.

The meeting, chaired by Interior Minister Abdelouafi Laftit alongside Budget Minister and Royal Moroccan Football Federation President Fouzi Lekjaa, brought together key stakeholders.

This included regional governors, city mayors, and heads of national institutions such as the National Railways Office (ONCF), National Airports Office (ONDA), and the National Telecommunications Regulatory Agency (ANRT).

Officials assessed the advancement of stadium construction and rehabilitation works in Rabat, Casablanca, Tangier, Fez, Marrakech, and Agadir, with all projects reportedly on track to meet completion deadlines.

Authorities have committed to finalizing all works before December, eight months ahead of the tournament’s kickoff.

Beyond sporting venues, the six host cities have launched complementary urban development initiatives focusing on improved mobility, infrastructure upgrades, and enhancement of areas surrounding stadiums.

These efforts include road renovations, access improvements, signage, public lighting, pedestrian zones, and green spaces creation – all designed to ensure optimal conditions for welcoming delegations and supporters.

Regional airports are undergoing modernization to accommodate the expected surge in passengers, while the ONCF is strengthening rail connectivity between host cities to facilitate internal travel during the competition.

The comprehensive preparation strategy extends beyond physical infrastructure to include cultural programming.

Street animations, concerts, exhibitions, and artistic events are being planned to create a festive atmosphere in host cities, showcasing Morocco’s cultural wealth while offering visitors an experience beyond football.

The tournament, scheduled from December 21, 2025, to January 18, 2026, represents a strategic opportunity for Morocco to enhance its international profile and stimulate local economies.

It also serves as a dress rehearsal for the 2030 FIFA World Cup, which Morocco will co-host with Spain and Portugal.

Authorities have emphasized that no detail will be overlooked as the country aims to organize an exemplary continental tournament, honoring the trust placed in it by the Confederation of African Football (CAF).
