CAF boss Patrice Motsepe doubles down on his support for Gianni Infantino as FIFA governance questions loom over the upcoming presidential elections.
Africa's most powerful football voice has picked his side. CAF President Dr Patrice Motsepe has reaffirmed the continent's backing for FIFA President Gianni Infantino, arguing that any allegations of governance breaches belong with FIFA's Ethics Committee.
Motsepe spoke at a Global Perspectives event in Doha, Qatar, where he was pressed on governance, transparency and the direction of world football's governing body. He called Infantino a close friend and a "very loyal" one, and said Qatar was the right place to have the conversation after its widely praised hosting of the 2022 World Cup.
The CAF chief also stressed that football must pull in one direction, singling out Europe's importance to the global game and the work it has done. His message was about unity: he said he was confident that, with good will from everyone involved, stakeholders would come together and the elections would go ahead in a few weeks.
For African football, the stakes are high. CAF's 54 member associations carry real weight in any FIFA vote, and Motsepe's public stance shows where the continent's leadership currently stands. With the election approaching, all eyes are on whether the dialogue among football's stakeholders delivers the calm Motsepe is predicting.
