NBA young stars seek insurance against career-threatening injuries

The NBA’s top young stars are campaigning for league-financed insurance policies to protect them against career-threatening injuries when the season resumes.

This follows a call on Friday involving some young players and the National Basketball Players Association.

Among the players who partook in the discussion were Miami's Bam Adebayo, Sacramento's De'Aaron Fox, the Los Angeles Lakers' Kyle Kuzma, Utah's Donovan Mitchell and Boston's Jayson Tatum.

The aforementioned five are all players with significant star and earning power in the league.

ESPN reports that players do not want to risk losing monies or contracts in the bubble restart in Orlando.

Sources say they discussed with executive director Michele Roberts and senior counsel Ron Klempner about the possibility of the NBPA facilitating talks with the league on insurance allowances for players.

All young players who were part of the 2017 NBA Draft Class are eligible for rookie extensions when the free agency period begins in mid-October.

They, therefore, want protection in the event of contracting the novel Coronavirus or sustaining serious injuries when the NBA season restarts.
