McLaren's Lando Norris beat the rain and a near 90-minute delay to claim pole position for the Sao Paulo Grand Prix at Interlagos.
Lando Norris will start from the front of the grid at the Sao Paulo Grand Prix after taking pole position in a rain-soaked, stop-start qualifying session at Interlagos.
The McLaren driver kept his composure when conditions turned ugly. Heavy rain forced a delay of nearly an hour and a half, leaving teams and drivers waiting for the track to become safe enough to run. When action finally resumed, the pressure was on to find rhythm and grip on a slick, unforgiving circuit.
Interlagos has a reputation for chaos, and wet qualifying there tests nerve as much as speed. Drivers have to judge braking points on a surface that keeps changing, and one small mistake can wreck a lap. Norris handled it better than anyone and secured the top spot.
Pole gives Norris a major advantage going into the race. He gets a clean view of the first corner and a better chance of avoiding the usual first-lap scramble. With more unpredictable weather possible, Sunday's Grand Prix could be just as wild as qualifying.
