Novak Djokovic beats Diego Schwartzman to win Italian Open

Share

Novak Djokovic has won the Italian Open after defeating Diego Schwartzman in the final of the competition.

The world number one’s latest victory means he has now won a record 36 Masters titles in his career.

He matched Rafael Nadal on the all-time list of Masters winners when he won the Western & Southern Open title last month.

Djokovic was disqualified from the US Open, but brought his A-game to the Italian Open, beating Schwartzman 7-5 6-3 in the final.

Speaking in the aftermath of the game, the 33-year-old said he was super pleased with his output.

"It was a great week, a very challenging week. I don't think I played my best tennis this week but I think I found my best tennis in the decisive moments.

"I'm proud I managed to needed to find that fifth gear when I needed to,” Djokovic added.

The Italian Open final was watched by a small crowd, who were made to sit a distance from each other as part of COVID-19 protocols.

Djokovic will now be aiming to add another title to his locker when the French Open begins in Sunday.
