Nigeria’s Folashade Oluwafemiayo has once again etched her name into the history books, breaking her own world record in the women’s over 86kg para-powerlifting event.

The 40-year-old lifted an astonishing 168kg to win gold at the 2025 World Para Powerlifting Championships in Cairo, Egypt, on Thursday.

China’s Wenjun Zhu claimed silver, while Iran’s Nikoo Rozbahani took bronze.

The triumph marks Oluwafemiayo’s fourth world title, adding to her previous victories in Mexico City (2017), Nur-Sultan (2019), and Tbilisi (2021).

Oluwafemiayo improved on her previous record of 167kg set at the Paris 2024 Paralympics, where she became the first para-athlete achieve that feat. She won gold and set a world record she has now surpassed.

It was a remarkable day for Team Nigeria, as Rita Ferdinard also won gold on her World Championship debut in the women’s 79kg category with a best lift of 148kg.

Tolulope Ogundolie added silver in the women’s 41kg class, further underlining Nigeria’s strength in para-powerlifting.
