Former British sprinter Beth Dobbin has written to Prime Minister Andy Burnham, demanding more money for research into the 'life-decimating' illness ME.
Former British sprinter and Olympian Beth Dobbin is taking her fight off the track and into Downing Street. She has written directly to Prime Minister Andy Burnham, calling for more government funding for research into ME, a condition she describes as "life-decimating."
ME, or myalgic encephalomyelitis, is a long-term, complex illness. It is often linked with severe fatigue and can seriously limit everyday life. Dobbin's letter argues that the scale of its impact demands far greater investment in understanding it, and in finding better ways to treat it.
The intervention matters because of who is making it. Athletes who have competed at the highest level know what it takes to push the body to its limits, and Dobbin is using that profile to put the issue in front of the country's top political office.
The letter now puts the question to Burnham's government: will it commit more resources to ME research? Campaigners will be watching closely for a response.
