Africa's first-ever Olympic event gets a major boost as Qatar delivers buses and security equipment to Senegal.
History is coming to African soil, and Senegal is getting some serious backup to deliver it. Qatar has handed over 15 buses and a consignment of security equipment to support preparations for the Dakar 2026 Youth Olympic Games, the first Olympic event ever staged on the continent.
The Games run from October 31 to November 13, putting Dakar at the center of the global sporting calendar. For African athletes, fans and organisers, it is a landmark moment, and getting transport and security right will be central to making it a success.
Qatar says the gesture draws on lessons from hosting the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 and other international tournaments. Its Ambassador to Senegal, H.E. Youssef Shaban Ibrahim Al Sada, described the two countries' relationship as strong and long-standing, calling the Games "a historic moment for sports in Africa."
Al Sada added that sharing the expertise gained from staging major events is among the most valuable contributions Qatar can make, reflecting its belief in sport as a tool for strengthening cooperation between nations. Qatar has backed other host nations in recent years in a similar way.
With the opening ceremony on the horizon, the focus now turns to Dakar's readiness. The buses and security support are practical steps toward a Games that Africa has waited a long time to host.
