Real Madrid finally launched a women’s football team

Share

Real Madrid has launched a women’s team ahead of the start of the 2020-2021 football season.

This is the club’s first women’s team in its 118-year history, following an official announcement on Wednesday.

Last year, Real Madrid announced a decision to absorb Club Deportivo Tacón, a women’s club based in Madrid.

The buyout cost a sum of €300,000 (£265,000) and became official on July 1. 2020.

The club’s women’s team will train at their main training complex, the Ciudad Real Madrid, which is 40 times bigger than the Santiago Bernabéu.

In a statement, the club said:  “Real Madrid is looking forward to this new challenge with the commitment of promoting the promotion of women's football and contributing to its development and growth in our society.”

Tacón signed Sweden internationals Kosovare Asllani and Sofia Jakobsson, who was nominated for the 2019 Women’s Ballon d’Or.

“Proud to announce that I’ll be the first official signing for Real Madrid/CD Tacón,” Asllani tweeted last summer following her move.

“Excited to write history, to help build and be part of this teams journey from the very start. It’ll be a dream to wear the most beautiful jersey in the world starting next season.”
