Christian Agyenim's 93rd-minute strike sinks the defending champions and hands Medeama their first Ghana Premier League defeat of the season.
Drama in the Ghana Premier League as the defending champions finally came crashing down. Medeama SC lost their first match of the season on Sunday, beaten 2-1 by FC Samartex 1996 at the Nsenkyire Arena in a Week 7 thriller decided deep into stoppage time.
The first half passed without a goal, but Samartex struck first in the 54th minute when Joshuah Fuseini put the hosts ahead and sent the home fans into raptures. Medeama refused to fold. Dominic Amponsah leveled the score in the 79th minute, and it looked as though the Mauve and Yellow would escape Samreboi with a hard-earned point.
Then came the sucker punch. Three minutes into injury time, Christian Agyenim netted the winner to snatch all three points for Nana Agyeman's side. The Nsenkyire Arena erupted as Samartex completed a memorable victory over the reigning champions.
The loss ends Medeama's unbeaten start to the campaign, but the Tarkwa-based club still sit at the top of the table on 14 points. Samartex, meanwhile, have moved level with them on points, which adds extra spice to the early title race. Medeama will now look to bounce back quickly, while Samartex will be riding high on confidence after this late, dramatic win.
