Senegal legend Aliou Cisse resigns as Libya head coach

Aliou Cisse has stepped down as head coach of the Libya national team, bringing an early end to his tenure, with reports pointing to financial challenges behind the decision.

The 50-year-old, who was appointed in March 2025 on a two-year contract with an option for a third, confirmed his resignation on Wednesday through social media.

“Last March was exceptional for me, as it saw my final camp as head coach of the Libya national team. It was a very enriching adventure both professionally and personally, and I couldn’t leave without addressing you from the heart,” Cisse wrote on Instagram.

“To the technical staff and the players: despite the difficulties we faced, I am proud of the work we accomplished together and the results we achieved. I truly believe in this team, and I have no doubt that you will continue your efforts to move it forward.

“To the Libyan fans: I would like to thank you for the warm welcome you gave me, and for your enthusiasm and unlimited support. I will never forget you, and I know that the Knights of the Mediterranean will always be able to count on you. I wish you all the best in the future.”

During his stint, the former Senegal star took charge of 10 matches, recording three wins, five draws and two defeats, with his final two games against Niger Republic and Liberia ending in stalemates.

Although Cisse was bringing organisation to the North African team, results were inconsistent as they struggled to get the result despite impressive performances.

Despite his challenges, the tacticians who led his country to win the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations remained publicly appreciative of the opportunity to manage the Mediterranean Knights.

With this, the Libyan Football Federation will now begin the search for a new head coach following Cisse’s abrupt exit.
